Welcome

Welcome to the second edition of the Cumbria Sport Partnership e-zine!

To celebrate the launch of Beijing 2008 on 08/08/08, this edition features news on what Cumbria is doing to prepare for London 2012!  With Beijing 2008 rapidly approaching, Cumbria Sport Partnership is working hard to encourage clubs, coaches, volunteers and participants to get behind the Games and get more people, more active, more often! During the school holidays, and Active Cumbria Week during 11th-17th August, many Leisure Centres, NGB’s and Sport Development Officers have organised taster sport sessions and holiday sports clubs to encourage participants to try something different and hopefully inspire some future Cumbrian Olympians like those featured in this e-zine.

If you have a story that you would like to see in the newsletter, on our website or in Active Cumbria (monthly sport and physical activity newspaper supplements published throughout Cumbria), please email amy.clement@cumbriacc.gov.uk.

If you would like to know more about the work of Cumbria Sport Partnership, or get involved, please search the 'About Us' pages of the Cumbria Sport Partnership website, or contact the office on 01228 226885.

Meet Cumbrian Young Olympic Hopefuls

CARLISLE’S Sheepmount sports facilities have been awarded Centre of Excellence status and are listed in the LOCOG Training Camps Guide along with Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow and Kendal Judo Club. Each of these facilities hopes to host teams in training for the 2012 London Olympics. To celebrate this, and the impending launch of the Beijing Olympics, ‘Active Cumbria’ caught up with a number of local young medal hopefuls who hope to be competing in the historic games. Our hopefuls include runner Laura Park, who won the 2007 Young Sports Personality of the Year at the Cumbria Sports Awards, squash player Victoria Bell, badminton player Lauren Smith and judo champion Michael Horley. The London 2012 Legacy

To maximise the opportunities from the staging of the Olympic and Paralympic games, and to leave a lasting legacy beyond, Cumbrian agencies have organised themselves into a proactive ‘Cumbria 2012’ action group.

Local Government, Higher Education, Learning and Skills, The University of Cumbria, Cumbria Tourism, Culture, Economy, The Lake District National Park Authority, and SPORT through the Cumbria Sport Partnership, are represented on the group. An action plan is being developed for each theme that the group members represent.

Eddie Edge, Director of Cumbria Sport Partnership explains: ‘‘Cumbria Sport Partnership will lead on ensuring that a lasting legacy of high quality sports clubs, coaches and volunteers are in place to offer more opportunities, particularly for young people, to take up sport after watching the games. Cumbria County Council has thrown its backing behind a major sporting event planned for Keswick next year.
The first ever Commonwealth ultra distance and mountain running championship is planned for September 2009 and could see fell running return to its natural home (the world's first ever organised fell race took place in Grasmere in 1850).

Cumbria Sport Partnership Gain Clubmark Licence

Cumbria Sport Partnership Gain Clubmark Licence

Cumbria Sport Partnership are delighted to announce that we have gained a licence to award local sports clubs the national kite mark accreditation, ‘Clubmark’.

Clubmark is a cross-sport quality accreditation for clubs with junior sections. Cumbria Sport Partnership can award clubs that are affiliated to a National Governing Body of Sport (NGB) that does not have a license themselves. It is the only nationally recognised 'kite-mark' for sports clubs to show children, parents, schools and local facilities that a sports club offers a safe, and quality assured environment for juniors. More>>
