Welcome to the Cumbria Sport Partnership Winter 2008 e-zine!
It’s the 4th edition of the ezine... it’s December! ... and Christmas is just around the corner along with a new year 2009, and in just over 3yrs it’s London 2012, which will see the ‘Greatest Sporting Show on Earth’ come to the UK.
Cumbria is already making plans to be part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by setting up the Cumbria 2012 Steering Group, which last month staged its first major Conference in Kendal, attended by 80 delegates from a variety of organisations across Cumbria looking to maximise the benefits of the London 2012 legacy.
2009 promises to be an exciting year for Cumbria Sport and its partners. With a new Sport England strategy in place by April 2009, together with a refreshed Cumbria Sport Partnership Strategy that aligns itself to helping Sport England achieve its objectives. This will lead to a more focused approach for Cumbria to raise participation levels in sport whilst continuing to develop a much needed sporting infrastructure to cater for an ever increasing demand by people wishing to get involved in sport.
The Department of Health have also shown confidence in the sports partnership network of SPAAs facilitated by Cumbria Sport Partnership, and will be providing funding in 2009 to assist with the delivery of projects around physical activity. This means that there will be an activity for everyone to get involved in, either in a more formal sport setting or indeed an activity for pure recreation, to help people get fitter or just for pure enjoyment. So roll on 2009...and start thinking now about how you can help others get more active, or take part yourself.
But for now may I wish you all, on behalf of all the team at Cumbria Sport Partnership, a very enjoyable festive season and a happy New Year!
Best Wishes
Eddie Edge – Partnership Director

The talents and dedication of athletes, sports teams, coaches and sport volunteers in Cumbria were celebrated at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the annual Cumbria Sports Awards on Friday 28th November. Nearly 300 guests congratulated winners at the event at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere.
Organised by Cumbria Sport Partnership, the awards recognise the outstanding talents, commitment and successes of teams and individuals throughout Cumbria who are involved in sport.
This year’s winner of the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award went to Racing Driver, Oliver Turvey. Our winner has had a truly outstanding 2008, having recently been named as Formula 3 driver of the year by the Racing Steps Foundation, which provides vital financial support to young drivers such as him. This accolade came during a debut F3 season in which he has won twice at Oulton Park and Spa and also gained eight podium finishes. SPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE
Club Database
Merseyside Sport are currently undertaking a piece of work to develop an online database of sports clubs in the North West that can be maintained by the region's county sports partnerships and be published for the public's use on each of our websites.
Each counties club database would exist independently on the CSP website, but the ‘Find a Club’ link on each website would take the public to Google mapping facility where searches for the nearest club can be done without boundaries, i.e. to avoid a Cumbrian searcher missing out on knowing about a sports club just inside of the Lancashire boundary area. Cumbria Sport Partnership is currently collecting information on all our clubs, with help from each Local Authority. We are also preparing to send a mail out to all clubs in the New Year to check the accuracy of their club details for the new database.
Sports Workforce Education Programme
Cumbria Sport Partnership is in the process of planning a schedule of Sports Workforce Education courses. Working in consultation with Sport Development Officer and each Local Authority, the new programme will ensure that sports professionals will not have access to high quality courses delivered in Cumbria throughout the year. The programme will launch in March 2009. Please contact Aileen Cubbon (Development Officer-Sporting Infrastructure) on 01228 221262 or email aileen.cubbon@cumbriacc.gov.uk if you have any comments on the development on the education programme, or if there are any particular courses you would like delivered in Cumbria.

The results of the National School Sport Survey for 2007/08 have recently been released, showing that Cumbrian school children have smashed the target for pupil’s participation in two hours of High Quality PE each week! 90% of school children now benefit from at least 2 hours of PE a week, which is 5 percentage points above the national target of 85% for 2008.It is a credit to the hard work of School Sport Partnerships, their Partnership Development Managers and the wide variety of sports on offer that such a high percentage of Cumbrian schools are offering 2 hours of PE per week.
