ACTIVE PEOPLE 2 RESULTS SHOW INCREASE IN 'ACTIVE' CUMBRIA
Sport England has just released the 6 monthly results from Active People 2 compared with the same 6months in the original survey. The survey has found that the number of adults across Cumbria who regularly participate in sport and active recreation has again increased, with the 55s and over showing the biggest growth spurt.
In Cumbria the % of the adult population taking part in 3 days a week of at least moderate intensity sport and active recreation for at least 30 minutes has risen from 19.1% in APS1 (mid Oct 05-mid April 06) to 23.8% in APS2 (mid Oct 07-mid April 08).
There are 49 County Sport Partnerships throughout England, and Cumbria Sport Partnership is one of the five who are on track to achieve or exceed the target of a 3% rise in participation over three years. It cannot be assumed that these changes will be replicated in future quarters, yet as more results become available over time we will have greater confidence that the changes we are seeing in Cumbria are real and sustained.

LONDON 2012
Up in Cumbria it may seem that we are miles away from the 2012 action, but there are many ways we can join in the Olympics. Use the Games to inspire people to take up a new sport, to volunteer, or to take part in a cultural project. Local businesses might be one of the thousands that win Games-related contracts. However you look at it, the 2012 Games are set to make a difference to our area.

TRAINING CAMPS
In Cumbria three sports venues have been identified as potential training camps for athletes competing in the games. They are: The Sheepmount in Carlisle, Kendal Judo Club and Hoops Basketball Centre in Barrow. These venues all appear in the official LOCOG Training Camps Directory launched at the Games in Bejing this year. Each of these venues provide excellent sports facilities, and are currently developing plans to target teams of athletes who may come and use our facilities in the run up to the games.
Recently a delegation from the North West which included advisors Don Parker, Kevin Hickey and Rob Young were taken on a tour of these facilities by Cumbria Sports Director - Eddie Edge. The group met with the operators to advise and provide support in attracting National Olympic Teams to come up to Cumbria to make final preparations for the 2012 Games. The main messages from the day were about the whole of the community and local business getting behind these venues and putting together an attractive package to entice teams to Cumbria.
For more information email: nwpregamescamps@sportengland.org or contact Rob Young, North West 2012 Coordinator on rob.young@nwda.co.uk.

COMPETITION MANAGERS
Increasing the number of young people involved in competitive sport is a key element of the Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People which will offer all 5-16 year olds five hours of sport per week, and three hours for 16-19 year olds. A key driver for this, the national roll out of Competition Managers, is now well underway. As this new network of Competition Managers is developed, work will be further developed to focus on ‘competition’ to align with results from the successful pilot programme ... More >
