Sports Personality of the Year - Oliver Turvey

Last year the county’s top sporting honour of 'Sports Personality of the Year' went to racing driver Oliver Turvey, who had a truly outstanding 2008, being named Formula 3 driver of the year by the Racing Steps Foundation. This acolade came during a debut F3 season in which he won twice at Oulton Park and Spa and also gained eight podium finishes. He finished a magnificent second in the 2008 British Formula 3 Championships.

Since winning Cumbria's 'Sports Personality of the Year' Oliver has had a fantastic year driving the World Series Renault Championship 09. Winning at Monaco, podium finishes at Silverstone & Le Mans and 8 rookie wins.

Previous winners include Scott Carson, the Whitehaven-born goalkeeper, Lions and England rugby union winger Mark Cueto, cricketer Paul Nixon, rally ace Malcolm Wilson and speedway rider Carl Stonehewer.
Awards organisers Cumbria Sport Partnership are asking Cumbrian sports fans to send in their nominations. But it is not only the headline-grabbing professional stars they are looking to honour.
