Do you know a Cumbrian sporting hero?

The search to find the award winners for the Cumbria Sports Awards 2009 will begin! The prestigious Cumbria Sports Awards are to be presented on Friday November 27th at The Low Wood Hotel, Windemere. We are looking for sporting heroes for 12 categories including the 'all new' Young Leader Award and five Rising Star Awards!

Sports Personality Of The Year

Last year the county's top sporting honour of 'Sports Personality of the Year' went to racing driver Oliver Turvey, who had a truly outstanding 2008, being named Formula 3 driver of the year by Racing Steps Foundation. Previous winners include Anna McKenzie, the first female winner of the Mirror Sailing Championships in South Africa, goalkeeper Scott Carson, and Lions and England Rugby Union winger Mark Cueto. Sports Personality of the Year Sponsored by Cumbria County Council our most prestigious award is awarded to an individual who has had the finest sports achievement throughout the year

Sports Team Of The Year

2008 Team of the Year Award went to Barrow Football Club after they performed a remarkable transformation during the course of thier season. Sponsored by Eden District Council the Team of the Year Award is awarded to the team with the best team achievement throughout the year

Sports Performance Of The Year

2008 saw golf player Gary Lockerbie walk away with the Performance of the Year Award after winning the Kasakhstan Open, the most lucrative event on the European Challenge Tour. Sponsored by Longhorn, we are looking to award the best single performance by an individual or team throughout the year

Special Award

The Special Award 2008 went to Ken Law who stood out for the level of dedication to his chosen sport Bowls for over 50 years. The Special Award sponsored by South Lakeland District Council is awarded at the discretion of the judging panel for special sports achievement

Service Award

The 2008 Service to Sport Award went to Geoff Grainger who has been involved in football and developing youth teams in Abbeytown  for over 50 years. Geoff is now responsible for  providing football opportunities for over 250 young people every week. Sponsored by Cumberland Building Society, the Service to Sport Award recognises and acknowledges dedicated services to sport in Cumbria, regardless of time

'All New' Young Leader Award

The 'all new' Young Leaders Award is a brand new award for 2009 developed to acknowledge the leadership skills by young people in sport volunteering. Whether it's within or outside a school setting all nominations are welcome. Award is sponsored by Armstrong & Watson. Nominees must be under 20 years of age on 31st December 2009

Junior Team Of The Year

2008 Junior Team of the Year went to the First XV Rugby Union Team from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith after reaching the final of the Daliy Mail VAse at Twickenham. Sponsored by Barrow In Furness Borough Council the Junior Team of the Year is awarded to a Junior Team who have demonstrated the finest achievement throughout the past year

Rising Star Awards

2008 saw a fabulous aray of young sporting talent from around Cumbria. Last years winners were, Sam Hall (Sailing), Richard Houghton (Cycling), Dannieka Borthwick (Tennis), Hannah Bethwaite (Fell Running), Jemma Bell (Orienteering). Our Five Rising Star Awards  are to recognise thier sporting achievements or potential. This year our Rising Star Awards are sponsored by Carlisle City Council, Allerdale Borough Council and Copeland Borough Council

Coach Of The Year

2008's Coach of the Year Award went to Hockey Coach Peter Nicholson. Peter was Team Manager for the GB Men's Team at the Beijing Olympics. Sponsored by Cumbria Sport Partnership this award recognise's coaches who deliver exceptional impact. This award is limited to NGB Qualified Coaches only

Junior Personality Of The Year

The most keenly contested category of 2008 Awards the Junior Sports Personality of the Year went to athlete Laura Park. Sponsored by News and Star the award goes to the finest sports achievement throughout the year, an exceptional Rising Star. The winner must be under 81 on 31st December 2009

Volunteer Award

Frank Davidson was the winner of 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award and also a strong contender for other catergories. Sponsored by New Balance this award recognises the greatest contribution to a club, performer, community or school this year, regardless of age

Disability Performance Award

The 2008 Disability Performance Award went to Paula Johnson who represented GB Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team at the Paralympics in Beijing. Sponsored by Sellafield Ltd this award goes to the team or individual with a recognised disability who has achieved the best single performance during this year
